Session Description

What killed Nokia was not the iPhone. What killed Kodak was not digital photography. In both cases, the answer was already inside the building, held by people the organization had taught to keep quiet. Drawing on research from two of the most studied corporate collapses in modern history and Jim Collins' Level 5 leadership findings, this session reveals an uncomfortable pattern: the leaders most capable of building enduring teams and cultures are systematically overlooked by talent processes built to detect confidence rather than competence. You will meet the silent culture carriers in your own organization: the people your teams actually trust, who hold the most accurate picture of what is really happening, and whose names may not appear on your high potential list. You will leave with a new lens for finding them and three practical moves for making truth cheaper and quiet leadership visible.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how conventional talent identification processes systematically overlook high-impact leaders by selecting for confidence, charisma, and self-promotion rather than the humility and team-building behaviors research links to sustained organizational performance.
  • Identify the "silent culture carriers" in their own organizations using practical diagnostic questions that reveal the gap between who the org chart says leads and who teams actually follow.
  • Apply three evidence-based practices for surfacing suppressed talent and truth, including modeling leader responses that lower the cost of honesty and measuring leaders by what grows around them rather than by self-reported performance.
