On-Board Session
Be The Can Opener - How to reach out and have meaningful mental health conversations at work and at home.

Session Description
Every workplace is powered by people—and people don't always wear their struggles on the outside. Stress, anxiety, burnout, and personal challenges often reveal themselves through subtle changes in behavior long before they become performance issues. The question is: are leaders paying attention?
In this engaging and practical workshop, participants will learn how to recognize the early warning signs that a colleague or employee may be struggling and discover how a single conversation can change the trajectory of a person's life. Through compelling real-world stories, research-backed insights, and actionable strategies, attendees will explore a simple five-step framework for noticing behavioral changes, choosing the right time and place to talk, leading with empathy instead of judgment, asking meaningful questions, listening without trying to "fix" the problem, and following up with genuine care.
Whether you're an HR professional, people leader, or individual contributor, this session will provide practical tools for creating a culture where employees feel seen, heard, and supported. Because sometimes the most impactful leadership isn't found in policies or programs - it's found in a conversation that begins with, "How are you...really?"
The speaker will also serve as a disc jockey by incorporating music trivia and songs into the content for a fun and engaging experience with the audience.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Normalize Mental Health Conversations at Work where employees learn to reduce the stigma and be OK to reach out and feel safe when talking to HR or co-workers. Share a framework that HR professionals can model and encourage these conversations across all levels of their organizations.
- Reduce Stress with Humour - Drawing from The Power of Laughter, participants will understand how levity, play, and laughter are clinically and culturally linked to stress reduction. Learn fun and practical ways to integrate humour into their team culture without minimizing serious topics.
- Turn Awareness into Action Participants will walk away with at least three conversation frameworks they can immediately apply, whether in a 1-on-1, a team meeting, or a company-wide initiative to connect mental health directly to productivity and retention outcomes.
