Session Description

Biometrics in the workplace is becoming more and more popular, especially to ensure more accurate and compliant time and attendance tracking. A survey done by Spiceworks calculates around 62% of organizations are already using biometric technology as a means of authentication for their networks and that number is growing.

The example you're likely most familiar with is the Face ID software now available on the iPhone. However unlike (Personal Health Information (ePHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII), biometric data is not highly regulated.

Biometric data is an emerging privacy concern because it is not like a password. If it is compromised, it cannot be changed and has serious implications for the lives of those who own it. Internet-connected products play an increasingly important role in our lives, so ensuring those products protect the personal information that they collect is critical.

Presentation will focus on the challenges that come when using cutting edge technology and the safeguards you as an employer should take for the protection of biometric data used in the workplace.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • What is Biometric Data
  • Uses inside of the workplace
  • HR's responsibilities to protect Biometric Data; and, Current Legislative Activities surrounding Biometric Data
