Learning Objectives:

    1. Define entrepreneurship in an organizational context and recognize the need for developing an innovative workforce in today’s turbulent economy.
    2. Learn the characteristics of the entrepreneurial mindset and skillset.
    3. Learn strategies to build an entrepreneurial workplace culture through hiring, developing, and enforcing an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset.

 

Session Description:

Entrepreneurship is not just about starting a new business, it is the process of discovering, evaluating, and using resources to exploit opportunities and create value. In today's turbulent economy, an entrepreneurial workforce can be a key factor in an organization's competitive strategy. Employees that have an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset are better able to innovate and respond to challenges in the workplace. This session will define the entrepreneurial mindset and skillset and will ask participants to assess their own entrepreneurial approach in the workplace. Participants will explore strategies to create an entrepreneurial workplace culture including hiring entrepreneurial thinkers, providing professional development to employees, and encouraging innovative workplace behaviors. Finally, participants will also explore strategies to become more entrepreneurial and innovative specifically within the human resources function of the organization.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Lori Long is the Chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship in the School of Business at Baldwin Wallace University. Lori is a Professor of Management instructing courses in human resources, entrepreneurship, and general management and is also a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Innovation and Growth. She holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from Kent State University, a Master of Labor Relations and Human Resources from Cleveland State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Bowling Green State University. She is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources through the Human Resource Certification Institute. Lori is also the President of LK Consulting LLC,a human resource management consulting firm specializing in working with entrepreneurial firms, and she has more than twenty-five years of experience in management consulting.
